Easy veggies to grow on terrace/ balcony in the Summer season in India

When we are talking about vegetables that grow in the summer season means that fruits come in the summer months from April onwards. For that, seeds need to be sown in Feb/March.

If you are planning a garden on a terrace or balcony, start preparing your pots in January by filling the right proportion of soil, manure, and cocopeat. Prepare a list of vegetables you wish to grow in your garden in advance.

Here are a few tried and tested vegetables that grow well in pots/ grow bags. The basic requirement of all plants is almost the same.

Sunlight requirement- 6-8 hours direct sunlight

Pot depth required- 12"-15"

Compost- Every 15-20 days, Organic only

Temp. Requirement- 20-30 degree

Water- Soil needs to be moist until the seed starts to germinate, afterwards always check the soil with a finger. water only if don't stick to finger.

Pest control- Mix 40 ml of neem oil in 1 litre of water. Add 2-3 drops of gentle soap. Shake well and spray over plants every 10-15 days.

1. Tomatoes

2. Gourds- bottle gourd (Ghiya), Ridge Gourds (Turai), Apple gourd (Tinda) & bitter gourds (Karela)

3. Okra

4. Cucumber or kakri

5. Zucchini (Courgette )

6. Beans- French beans, Lobia beans (Cowpea), Gwar

7. Brinjal ( Eggplant)

Seeds of Tomatoes, brinjal, and okra can be sown in seed trays or coco coir pots indoors in January or early February. These can be kept near a bright window. This saves them from temperature difference in day and night in receding winters. These can be shifted outside when the temperature is warmer and transplanted in 12" deep pots at 6" apart pots/grow bags.

Seeds of others can be sown directly in pots. when the temperature is nearly 20 degrees. Sow these vegetables in the month of Feb to get maximum productivity.
